What Is a Notary Public?

Q: What does a Notary Public do?

A Notary Public is a qualified legal professional authorised to certify, authenticate and witness documents for use overseas or in foreign legal systems. This includes:

  • Certifying signatures and copies of documents
  • Administering oaths and affirmations
  • Drafting and witnessing powers of attorney for use abroad
  • Preparing affidavits and statutory declarations
  • Legalising documents for international authorities

Notarisation gives official, recognised status to documents sent outside the UK.

How Does the Process Work?

Q: What happens when I bring documents to be notarised?

The process usually involves:

  • 1 Initial discussion: We identify exactly what type of notarisation you need and where the documents will be used.
  • 2 Document preparation: We check your documents and advise if any changes are required.
  • 3 Verification / identity check: We confirm your identity and any required evidence.
  • 4 Notarial act: We notarise your documents with the appropriate wording, seal and signature.
  • 5 Legalisation (if needed): We can assist with further legalisation (e.g., Apostille) if required by the receiving country.

You will receive the fully certified documents with all necessary notarial wording.

Transparent Pricing & Costs

We believe in clear and straightforward cost guidance for notarial work so you can plan with confidence.

Q: How much do notary services cost?

A: Notarial fees vary depending on the type and scale of work required. For many standard notarial acts (such as certifying signatures or copies), there will be a set fee.

We will:

  • Provide a clear fee estimate before any work begins
  • Explain what is included and whether any additional costs (e.g., travel, legalisation fees) apply
  • Keep you informed of any third-party fees (e.g., courier, embassy legalisation)

Example:

  • Certifying a signature or copy of a document – typical fixed fee (ask for current scale)
  • Powers of Attorney for use abroad – priced according to complexity
  • Apostille / Legalisation service – charged at the government fee plus handling

We will always confirm exactly what fees will apply before undertaking any work.

How Long Does Notarisation Take?

Q: When can I get my documents back?

For standard notarial acts, documents are often completed on the same day if provided in person. More complex matters or those requiring translation or foreign legalisation may take longer. We will explain timelines during your initial enquiry.
